Flugelhorn
The flugelhorn uses trumpet fingerings and the same written range, but its wide conical bore gives it a completely different intonation character: slots are loose, the upper register drifts flat and unfocused (the opposite of trumpet), and many designs offer no 1st- or 3rd-slide triggers to rescue the sharp low combinations. Mouthpiece shank fit changes the pitch of the whole horn. Chart shows written pitch (Bb instrument).
Common Pitch Tendencies
- The conical bore makes pitch slots wide and forgiving-feeling — which really means the player, not the horn, holds the center; sing every pitch mentally before it sounds
- Upper register (written F5 and above) trends FLAT and unstable — the reverse of trumpet; high C typically sags badly
- 5th-partial notes (written C#5-E5) run flat as on all brass, and the loose flugel slots make them easier to leave uncorrected
- 1-3 and 1-2-3 combinations are sharp, and most flugelhorns lack slide triggers — pre-set the 3rd slide or lip the correction
- A 4th valve (on some models) replaces 1-3 and largely fixes the low-register sharpness
- The deep V-cup mouthpiece lowers the pitch center overall and exaggerates flatness when the air slows
- Mouthpiece shank/receiver fit shifts the ENTIRE horn: a mouthpiece seating too shallow (wrong taper, stops early) lengthens the column and plays the whole horn flat; too deep plays sharp — flugel shanks are not standardized
- Fatigue shows up as flatness sooner than on trumpet — the horn gives no slotting help when the embouchure tires
Temperature & Warm-up
Cold instrument plays flat and rises as it warms — warm air raises the speed of sound in the bore. The flugel's short, fat wrap warms quickly, but its already-flat-leaning upper register is worst on a cold horn: allow 5 minutes before trusting any high-register tuning decision.
Register Guide
Low Register
Low register (F#3-B3): the valve-combination notes are sharp, as on trumpet, but usually without triggers to fix them — pre-set the 3rd slide for the 1-3/1-2-3 notes and lip the rest. The dark low register masks small errors from the player but not from the ensemble.
Middle Register
Middle register (C4-C5): the flugel's home. Stable and warm — tune C4 (sounds concert Bb3), then verify the C5 octave, which exposes mouthpiece shank-fit problems. Do your intonation calibration here.
High Register
High register (C#5 and up): first the flat 5th-partial notes, then a general flat, unstable drift that grows with altitude — the opposite of trumpet's sharp tendency. Fast air and a clear mental pitch are the only fixes; the horn's slots will not catch you. Writing above G5 on flugel is a deliberate color choice.

Equipment & Setup
Mouthpiece
- The deep V-cup (Bach flugel cups, Denis Wick 2FL/4FL class) creates the dark tone and drops the pitch center — a shallower flugel cup raises the upper register at the cost of the characteristic sound
- Shank tapers are NOT standardized: small (French/Couesnon-style), standard, and Bach-taper shanks all exist — a mouthpiece that seats too shallow plays the whole horn flat; too deep plays sharp and closes the gap so the horn feels stuffy
- Check the gap: the mouthpiece end should sit close to (not against) the leadpipe start — excessive gap makes the upper register even less stable
- Do not play trumpet rim sizes you cannot support — the flugel exposes a tired embouchure as flatness immediately
Instrument
- Many flugelhorns tune at a small main slide, some at the mouthpipe/receiver — know which yours is, and re-check the octave C4/C5 after every adjustment
- A 3rd-slide trigger (e.g. Yamaha 631G, Getzen 895 option) is the single most valuable intonation feature on a 3-valve flugel — use it for C#4/D4/G3
- 4-valve models (e.g. Getzen 896) replace 1-3 combinations and open a better-tuned low register
- Vintage French-style horns (Couesnon and kin) are the loosest-slotting and flattest up high — legendary sound, unforgiving intonation
- Valve alignment and worn valves show up as fuzz in the already-wide slots — service matters more for pitch here than on trumpet
Practice Tips
- Verify mouthpiece shank fit before blaming your chops: if the whole horn is flat with the slide nearly in, the mouthpiece is seating too shallow (the taper is wrong for the receiver and stops short)
- Tune the open C4, then play the C4-C5 octave — if the octave is narrow or wide, fix the mouthpiece/gap situation before touching the slide again
- Pre-set the 3rd slide out about a half inch for C#4 (1-2-3) and D4 (1-3) passages when you have no trigger — and remember to return it
- Drone-sustain the 5th-partial notes (C#5-E5) and the top-of-staff F5-G5: on flugel BOTH zones drift flat, so the correction is always "lift", unlike trumpet
- Keep air speed up in the upper register — the flugel goes flat exactly when trumpet habit says to relax for descent into a dark sound
- Switching from trumpet mid-set: play one slurred C4-G4-C5 arpeggio and re-center — your trumpet-calibrated corrections are mostly backwards up high
- In a section, let the flugel sit slightly darker and DOWN-tune nothing: the sag is already built in; aim dead center and the blend follows
- If you regularly play lead-register passages on flugel, test 4-valve or triggered instruments — mechanics beat heroic lipping for repeatability

- In big-band flugel features, the section tunes to the lead flugel exactly as with trumpets — but with darker attacks, beats are harder to hear: sustain and listen low in the texture

Overrides
- The flugel's natural upper-register flatness partially "pre-tunes" major 3rds at the top of chords (which want to sit ~14 cents low) — aim center and check before lipping up on principle
- Unison passages with trumpets are the danger zone: trumpet drifts sharp where flugel drifts flat — someone must own the center; agree on who before the take
- In flugel choirs (4+ parts), tune bottom-up from the lowest voice; the wide slots make top-down tuning unstable
Mouthpiece & Cup Choice
- Deep V-cup (true flugel cup): the characteristic dark sound and a lower overall pitch center — the horn is designed around it; shallow "trumpet-ish" hybrid cups raise the top but thin the core
- Shank taper is the hidden variable: small (French), standard, and Bach tapers all circulate — the wrong taper seats at the wrong depth and moves the WHOLE horn flat (shallow seat — the classic loose-shank flugel failure) or sharp (deep seat)
- Receiver gap: excessive gap loosens the already-wide slots further, hurting the unstable upper register first
- Rim: most players match their trumpet rim diameter with a flugel cup underneath — a bigger rim than you can support turns into upper-register flatness by the end of a set
- Backbore and throat are usually generous on flugel mouthpieces — resist opening them further; a too-open throat accelerates the high-register sag
