English Horn
The English horn (cor anglais) reads like an oboe but sounds a perfect 5th lower. Pitch level is set almost entirely by the reed and the bocal — the body has no tuning joint — so intonation work is reed work. The bulbous bell and longer tube give it a flatter, more covered low register than oboe and a historically unstable third-space C (written C5). Chart shows written pitch.
Common Pitch Tendencies
- The reed and bocal set the pitch level — there is no joint to pull; never draw the bocal out more than a hair or the scale collapses
- Bocals come in graded lengths (makers number them, e.g. 1/2/3) — a longer bocal flattens the entire instrument; choose length before touching the reed
- Low register (written B3-E4) tends flat and speaks reluctantly at soft dynamics
- Upper register sharpens with embouchure pressure, increasingly above written G5
- Written third-space C5 is the historically unstable note — it drops in pitch on diminuendo; modern bocals largely tame it, so test it when trying bocals

Temperature & Warm-up
A cold instrument plays flat and comes up as warm air raises the speed of sound in the bore — allow 5-10 minutes. The reed is the bigger variable: a dry reed plays sharp, bright, and resistant; keep it soaked. Wooden bodies also move with humidity, so avoid rapid swings.
Register Guide
Low Register
Low register (written B3-E4): flat-tending and reluctant at soft dynamics. The covered, bulb-bell sound tempts players to force — instead use warm, slow air and accept that pp low entries need early air. Low B3 is the hardest note to place quietly.
Middle Register
Middle register (F4-C5): the stable heart of the instrument. Forked F is the one flat trap — prefer left F. Tune the reed so this register sits, then verify written E5 (sounds concert A4) against the ensemble.
Upper Register
Upper register (C#5-A5): opens with the half-hole notes (roll, never lift) — C#5 can crack or gurgle if the roll is imprecise — then the octave keys. Sharpness builds with lip pressure: drop the jaw, take less reed, and keep vent transitions clean.
High Register
High register (Bb5-C6 and above): very sharp under pressure and rarely written. Above C6, fingerings are instrument-specific — build your own chart. Most orchestral EH writing lives well below this.

Equipment & Setup
Reeds
- English horn reeds are wider and heavier than oboe reeds, with longer blades on a much shorter cork-less staple that seats directly on the bocal — a loose reed-to-bocal fit reads as flat, unstable pitch
- Most EH reeds carry a wire: squeezing it from the sides opens the tip (flatter, darker, more resistant); squeezing top and bottom closes it (sharper, brighter, freer-blowing)
- A shorter or clipped reed plays sharper; a longer scrape plays flatter and freer — clip in tiny increments, you cannot un-clip
- The reed should crow around C; a reed that crows sharp will play the whole instrument sharp regardless of embouchure
- Dry reeds play sharp and resistant — soak thoroughly; a waterlogged reed goes flat and dull
Bocal
- Bocal length is the coarse tuner: makers grade them (commonly 1 = shortest/sharpest through 3 = longest/flattest) — own at least two lengths for A=440 vs A=442 work
- Bocal metal and wall thickness color the sound and shift resistance; try several with YOUR reed style before buying
- Seat the bocal fully — pulling it out to flatten wrecks the internal scale far faster than on oboe joints; fix sharpness at the reed instead
- A dented or corroded bocal destabilizes the upper register first — inspect it when high notes start wandering
Instrument
- The bulbous (pear-shaped) bell creates the covered low register — stuffing the bell (knee, mute) flattens the bottom notes and should be avoided while tuning

- Written E5 is your tuning check: it sounds concert A4 — match the oboe's A, then verify the octave E4 below it
- Steady the unstable third-space C5 with air, not lip: sustain it through a full diminuendo against a drone without letting the pitch sag, and slur into half-hole C#5 from below with constant air until the flip disappears
- Messa di voce daily on A4, E5, and G5 — the horn creeps sharp as you taper; learn to open the embouchure through the decay
- Use left F instead of forked F on sustained notes — the forked fingering is flat and covered
