Bass Trombone

The bass trombone is a large-bore Bb trombone with one or two valves that carry the range below the straight horn's E2. Slide positions are starting points, and every valve you engage widens the spacing between them — the stacked-valve low register runs sharp against the marked positions. Common Pitch Tendencies

  • Slide positions are approximations — the ear, not the marking, is the intonation system
  • Engaging the F valve widens position spacing (about half a position by the bottom of the slide); engaging both valves widens it further — learn fresh position maps, not offsets
  • Stacked valve tubing is proportionally too short: both-valve notes run sharp and need visibly longer positions
  • On single-valve horns, B1 needs a beyond-7th position most slides cannot reach — it plays sharp or not at all; this note is why the second valve exists
  • The pedal register (Bb1 down) tends flat and needs firm, slow air
  • 5th-partial notes (B3-D4) run flat, as on tenor — shade those positions slightly short
  • The large bore and mouthpiece make the pitch center wide: you can lip a note 25 cents off without hearing it alone — drone work is non-negotiable
  • Upper register positions shorten as partials crowd together, and tension pushes them sharp

Temperature & Warm-up

A cold horn plays flat, so positions must sit slightly shorter (and the tuning slide in) until it warms — and the valve tubing, tucked away from your breath, warms last: expect trigger notes to lag behind the open horn for the first minutes. Warm air raises pitch as it raises the speed of sound in the tube.

Pedal Register

Pedal register (Bb1 and below): flat-tending, needs firm slow air and an open throat. Pedal Bb1 in 1st is a daily calibration note — if it sags, everything above it is being lipped. Below Bb1 the valves extend pedals downward with the same widened spacings.

Valve register (B1-F2): the bass trombone's reason to exist. Every note here is sharp against the marked position because stacked valve tubing runs proportionally short — positions stretch progressively wider as you descend, and the both-valve notes (D2 down to B1) need the biggest corrections. Tune the valve slides first, then learn the map by ear.

Low Register

Low straight-horn register (Gb2-Bb2): standard trombone territory — 1st and 4th positions are reliable anchors. This is where the horn should feel effortless; tune here first.

Middle Register

Middle register (B2-F4): follows tenor trombone tendencies — 5th-partial notes (B3-D4) shade flat, outer positions (5th-7th) spread wider than marked. The wide bass bore hides small errors: verify with a drone.

High Register

High register (Gb4-Bb4): tension pushes sharp. Ab4 (8th partial) wants a slightly LENGTHENED 3rd — tension-sharpness is corrected by moving out, as on tenor — while A4 sits in a shortened 2nd. Most bass trombone writing stays below this — treat it as a flexibility zone, not a tessitura.

Equipment & Setup

Mouthpiece

  • Bass trombone mouthpieces are large (Bach 1.5G / 1G class, Schilke 59/60): the deep cup darkens tone and gives the low register room, at the cost of a wider, easier-to-miss pitch center
  • A rim too large for the player makes the valve register diffuse and flat-sounding even when the slide is right
  • Going up a cup depth typically drops the pitch center slightly — re-tune after any mouthpiece change, not just re-feel
  • Small-shank tenor mouthpieces do not belong in a bass trombone — the mismatch wrecks low-register intonation

valves

  • Single valve (F): range stops at C2 (long 6th-7th) and B1 is effectively missing — plan repertoire accordingly
  • Dependent (stacked) doubles: the 2nd valve only works with the 1st — the classic F/Eb (or F/D) dependent setup covers B1/C2, and dependent-horn positions differ from this chart's independent F/Gb assumption
  • Independent (in-line) doubles: the Gb valve works alone (Gb2 in 1st) and combines to D — the modern standard; tune the 2nd-valve slide so both-valve D2 centers in 1st
  • Open-wrap valve tubing blows freer and tends to center pitch better than tight traditional wraps — but the positions still widen the same amount
  • Set valve slides in order: main slide (Bb2), then F slide (F2 in 1st), then Gb/combination slide (Gb2, then D2)

Instrument

  • Bore 0.562" with a 9.5" bell is the modern standard — bigger equipment means pitch drifts must be heard, not felt
  • Dual-bore slides change resistance and can shift where outer positions land — remap 5th-7th when switching horns
  • A heavy slide with worn stockings drags — sluggish slide action reads as chronically sharp outer positions
  • Main tuning slide: pull to flatten in warm rooms; the valve register needs its own slides checked after any main-slide move

Practice Tips

  • Tune in layers: open Bb2 first, then F-valve F2 (adjust the F slide, not your arm), then Gb2 and the both-valve D2 — each valve slide, in that order
  • Widen positions the moment a trigger goes down: trigger 2nd is really 2.5, and by both-valve C2 you are a full position past the marking — drill the map until the arm does it automatically
  • Drone-sustain B1-D2 weekly: the both-valve notes are the sharpest on the horn AND the most exposed (they are your pedal-point notes in orchestra)
  • On single-valve horns, do not fight for B1 — it needs more slide than exists; arrange, lip a pedal, or play the 7th-position alternative an octave up
  • Shade the 5th-partial notes (B3-D4) short, as on tenor — the big bore makes their flatness easier to miss
  • Calibrate pedal Bb1 daily against a drone: firm air, no sag — a flat pedal register usually means bitten, starved air, and it follows you up the horn
  • The slide is your just-intonation superpower: in sustained chords, as the bass voice you hold the ROOT — keep it steady and let others tune 3rds and 7ths to you
  • After 10 minutes of playing, re-check the valve register — the valve tubing warms (and rises in pitch) later than the open horn

Slide & Position Notes

  • Straight horn: standard 7 positions, identical to tenor — 1st and 4th are the anchors
  • F valve engaged: spacing widens progressively — trigger 2nd sits near straight 2.5, and by the bottom of the slide each position is about half a position long
  • Both valves (D tuning): spacing widens further still — both-valve 1st is true 1st, but by C2 you are a full position past the marking and B1 needs a long 4th-5th reach
  • Tune the valve slides in order, one target per slide: main slide to Bb2, F slide so trigger F2 centers, then the Gb slide as the stated compromise — slightly long so combined D2 comes close while Gb2 sits a hair flat. Two slides cannot center three notes; the combo register still needs widened positions
  • The 5th-partial shading (B3-D4 slightly short) carries over from tenor unchanged
  • Fast valve passages: choose the valve that keeps the slide inside 4th position — long throws at bass-trombone slide mass smear pitch on the way
