Common Pitch Tendencies

  • The long tube makes register-vent placement a bigger compromise than on soprano — the clarion runs progressively sharper, and single-vent student horns tune it worst
  • Clarion C#5 (written) is a known sharp slot on many instruments — voice down or add resonance fingers

Temperature & Warm-up

A cold bass clarinet plays flat: warm air raises the speed of sound in the bore, so pitch comes up as the instrument warms — and the long, wide tube takes noticeably longer than a soprano (allow 10 minutes). Wooden bodies are also sensitive to humidity swings; never leave the instrument in extreme temperatures.

Register Guide

Extension

Extension notes (written C3-Eb3 on low-C horns, Eb3 on low-Eb horns): tend flat and speak slowly. Slow, warm air and an open throat; do not bite up to pitch. Intonation down here varies more between makers than anywhere else on the instrument.

Chalumeau

Chalumeau (E3-F4): the glory of the instrument and its tuning anchor. Stable when supported; flat when starved of air. Keep a consistent, open voicing.

Throat Tones

Throat tones (G4-Bb4): sharp and diffuse, as on soprano but with more room to fix — right-hand resonance fingerings lower pitch and fill out the tone. Voice low ("AW") and resist biting.

Clarion

Clarion (B4-C6): trends sharp, led by C#5 and the region above G5. Voice down rather than pulling the neck further — a neck pull flattens the (already stable) chalumeau with it.

Altissimo

Altissimo (C#6 up): reached with half-hole first-finger technique plus register key. Highly fingering-dependent and variable between instruments — build your own chart with a drone, and keep the voicing high without pinching.

Equipment & Setup

Mouthpiece

  • Bass clarinet mouthpieces are their own family (Vandoren B44/B46/B50, Fobes) — never force soprano habits onto them
  • More open tip (B46, B50) = darker and more flexible but flatter-tending; needs a softer reed and more air
  • Closer tip (B44) = more controlled pitch center, slightly sharper tendency — a common school standard
  • Push the mouthpiece fully onto the neck cork before tuning at the neck — a loose mouthpiece fit reads as random flatness
  • Take more mouthpiece than on soprano; too little reed in the mouth chokes the low register and pushes the clarion sharp

Reeds

  • Reed strength 2.5-3 is standard for students; 3-3.5 for advancing players — softer reeds sag flat in the chalumeau
  • Too hard a reed drives the clarion sharp and makes the extension notes reluctant to speak
  • Bass reeds warp fast — rotate several and flatten the table regularly for a stable pitch center
  • Synthetic reeds (Legere) hold pitch through long rehearsals and temperature swings at some cost in color

Instrument

  • Tuning happens at the neck: pull to flatten, push to raise — there is no barrel; 1mm at the neck moves the whole horn several cents
  • The floor peg sets the mouthpiece angle: too low forces a bitten, sharp embouchure — set peg height so the head stays level and the mouthpiece enters near the soprano angle
  • Low-Eb horns (student standard) end at written Eb3; low-C horns add keys to written C3 — the extension notes need their own tuning map
  • Double (automatic) register vents on pro horns tune the clarion markedly better than the single vent on student models
  • Check the neck angle and cork condition — a rotated or leaking neck destabilizes the throat tones first

  • Drone-sustain clarion C#5 daily — it is the instrument's signature sharp note; find the voicing that centers it and memorize the feel
  • Add right-hand resonance fingers on throat G4-Bb4 — they lower pitch 5-10 cents and fix the thin tone at the same time
  • Set the floor peg so you are not reaching down to the mouthpiece — a dropped head angle adds bite and pushes everything sharp

Reed & Mouthpiece

General

  • Harder reed = brighter, more resistant, slightly sharper at a given embouchure pressure
  • Softer reed = darker, more responsive, slightly flatter; watch for sagging long tones in the chalumeau
  • Embouchure pressure (biting) raises pitch and chokes the wide reed — the bass punishes biting faster than soprano
  • Voicing: "EE" raises pitch and brightens; "AW"/"OH" lowers and darkens — the wide bore gives voicing a bigger lever than on soprano
  • More mouthpiece in the mouth than soprano: too little reed kills the low register and pushes the clarion sharp
